Karl
Wienand passed into Spirit on July 26, 1999 after a long and courageous
bout with colon cancer. He lives on through his family and his music.
After the discovery of his illness in late 1998 he tried to finish
most of his arrangements for harp. He did complete most of it but
the sad thing is there won't be any new ones.
Karl held degrees
in organ, with a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Colorado
in Boulder. He was a Fulbright Scholar studying organ in Germany
under Helmut Walcha. His choral music has been published by Roger
Dean and Abington. Handbell music has been published by Posthorn
Press.
Karl was Professor of Music at Pfeiffer University
in Misenheimer, North Carolina, teaching organ, piano and music
theory. He was also the Music Director of the Stanly County Chorale,
a community chorus of fine repute.
As his wife, Marilyn, began
to play for situations which needed quiet, contemplative music,
he began to compose music for her which embodied those qualities,
and which has proven to be very helpful for her work with the terminally
ill.
His music for church choir includes unison
and two-part mixed choir pieces in a light popular style, as well
as SATB anthems with organ and/or handbells in more formal style.
Handbell music is often arrangements of popular church melodies.
The music for children and youth is definitely in a light popular
vein, and includes two Christmas musicals for children.
